China-Pak
Friendship K-2 Expedition -2002 is being
launched jointly by China Tibet Mountaineering
Association (CTMA) and Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP)
to commemorate the International Years of
Mountains 2002 and Golden Jubilee of the
establishment of the Diplomatic relations
between China and Pakistan. The Expedition will
attempt to climb K-2 (8611M). The
Expedition left Islamabad for Skardu Thursday,
23 May 2002.The team will start climb K-2 in the
first week of June.
The Expedition is being led
by veteran Tibet Chinese climber Mr. Sam Drug
and comprises members of China Tibet
Mountaineering team, which is attempting to
climb all the fourteen above eight thousand meters
high peaks of the world. The team began its
challenging undertaking in 1993,and till now has
climbed most of the peaks including Mt.
Everest.
The
Pakistani climber Mr. Rahmatullah Qureshi is leading
four members strong Pakistani side. The Govt of
Pakistan, as a token of Friendship has kindly waived
off peak royalty of the expedition. The Alpine Club of
Pakistan is providing logistic support to the
expedition besides participating in the climb.
