K2 & Broad Peak 2003: Czech Expedition
|
Czech climbers Radek
Jaros, Martin Minarik and Petr Masek are planning an
expedition to K2 & Broad peak in June - August 2003.
Martin and Radek were
members of the tiny 3-man Czech 2002 PRE Kangchenjunga
expedition, which climbed the mountain without
supplemental oxygen or high-altitude porters. Both
Martin and Radek reached the summit. As far as to
K2, for Radek Jaros and Petr Masek it will be their
second attempt on the mountain. In 2001 they were
members of the Czech 2001 K2 expedition on the SSE
Spur (Cesen Route), led by Zdenek Hruby. The Czech
expedition arrived to the base camp too late to be
sufficiently acclimatized for a summit push at the
time, when Hans Kammerlander and Jean Christophe
Lafaille reached the summit along the same route.
Unfortunately, as it turned later, there were no more
summit days in that season. Later on, Radek Jaros,
Petr Masek, Zdenek Hruby, and Miroslav Caban returned
high to the mountain, but a terrible storm forced
them down from the Shoulder. The descent in the raging
storm became a real fight for survival, Radek made it
with starting pneumonia, Petr luckily secured a fall
in a white-out, yet none of these experiences diverted
them of their total devotion to return to the
mountain.
In 2003 they plan to
attempt to climb both Broad Peak and K2. As on
Kangchenjunga, Martin, Radek and Petr want to climb in
a team of three, with no supplemental oxygen and no
high-altitude porters.
More news from
Martin, the expedition envoy (
in his modesty, Martin
does not want to be seen as the expedition leader)
will follow soon.
