Dan Mazur's Kangchenjunga Spring 2002

Dispatch March 22nd, 2002: The bulk of the team rested in base today. Michael came down in the afternoon, ecstatic about his summit success. It was fun to be together again, and we all sat around the heater in basecamp and told stories about our favorite rock bands, and sang bits of their songs, and reminisced about our all-time best movies, until the late hours. As you could imagine, it was a very lively and funny discussion, with a Frenchman, Englishman, and American participating. Our original cook boy, Pubu Tsering, left for Lhasa today, and we were sad to see him go, as he had done such an excellent job. We tipped him nicely. However, it was a great surprise to have our old friend and climbing companion from 2001 Nojin Tangla, and 2001 Shishapangma, Pemba Tashi, back with us now as cook boy. He had been one of the strongest climbers we ever met, so it was a bit ironic to have him as a cook boy, but apparently, the high-altitude school in Lhasa had sent him to Beijing to study in a big hotel restaurant for six months, so now they felt obligated to have him work his way up to the higher levels of the culinary arts. Our main cook Samding, has done an excellent job, and really goes out of his way to prepare tasty dishes with lots of fresh ingredients like vegetables, cheese, meat, potatoes, spices, etcetera.

Thank you very much. Cheers for now. Yours
Sincerely, Daniel Mazur from http://www.SummitClimb.com
