Mazur's Kangchenjunga
Spring 2002
Dispatch
March 5th, 2002: Today
we made it to Nyalam, at 3700 meters. The day
started out in sunshine at Zhangmu. It was very
warm and beautiful. Everyone was excited to watch
the snow melt, until an anonymous tourist told us
it would be three days till the road was cleared.
Then Jon Otto telephoned the Gyangyang Hotel from
Lhasa, and said they would try to work on it. We
left after lunch, and one lane of the road was
cleared. One of our three land-cruisers had to
pull the truck (with our baggage) up the steep
bits. Then, it became very windy, and began to
snow. Finally we made into Nyalam (which means
Hell in Tibetan). Now, its almost sundown, and the
weather has cleared nicely, and it has become a
very beautiful day. We are hanging out in the
Tashi-Amdo Cafe, located on the main street of
Nyalam, and a famous restaurant where nearly every
mountain climber coming in from Tibet has stopped
to have a drink, over the years. Alex Lowe,
Christian Bonnington, and Tomas Huber have stopped
here. Tomorrow we might try for Tingri, Shigatse,
or take a rest day here. Its not sure yet, as we
are behind schedule due to the bad weather, and
will have a group meeting and discuss the decision
tonight at dinner. Will write tomorrow with the
results. The whole group decision-making dynamics
thing should be interesting, and I have no idea
how it will come out.
Thank
you very much. Cheers for now. Yours
Sincerely, Daniel Mazur from http://www.SummitClimb.com
