2001 Noguchi/Asia Qomolangma Cleanup Expedition
|
Japanese climber Ken Noguchi again leads a clean-up
expedition on Everest. Ken is
concentrating on the area between 5300 and
8300 meters on the Tibetan side of Everest. His
goal is "To conduct the largest-ever clean-up of garbage left behind by
previous expeditions on Mt. Everest " The target is to collect 1 to 2
tons of garbage.
Details Leader: Ken Noguchi, 3 Chinese members, 1 South Korean member
(Lee Sang Paeo) , 2 Georgia members, 40 Nepalese members, 1 Pakistani member.
Last year Ken performed a clean up on Everest that bought much garbage down
the mountain. He was then criticized for leaving much of it on Everest in large
piles when a lake formed on Everest due to melting ice. Ken did not attempt the
Summit of Everest nor did any of his expedition members. Last year the
expedition did not ask for the permit to attempt the summit. This year some
members plan to attempt the summit. [It seems most clean-up expeditions on Everest are
criticized. But then again
every little bit helps !]
The 27-year-old Noguchi, is best known for being the youngest person ever to
have climbed the seven summits [at the time]. His record has now been broken a
few times.
The
expedition also includes Ms. Lakpa Sherpa (Nepali woman Everest
Summitter 2000 Spring from the south side). She will be going to the
top. This expedition is supported by Asian Trekking.
Update Lakpa
left the team and reached the Summit of Everest a second time,
on her own....
