Mountains for Active Diabetics
International Lectures at Plas Y Brenin
The international MAD weekend of
adventure sports and mountain active diabetics is
being held at Plas Y Brenin, Capel Curig between March
21st and 23rd 2003.
Two exciting evenings of unique
lectures are being organised with international
renowned speakers presenting a unique insight into
extreme exploits whilst also balancing the
inevitable challenges of diabetes management.
These
unique lectures will be of interest to a very wide
audience :- extreme sports enthusiasts, mountaineers,
climbers, mountain bikers, skiers, expedition doctors,
expedition leaders, individuals with diabetes, friends
and family of those with diabetes, outdoor pursuits
instructors, guides, trekking companies, teachers,
outdoor gear retailers, healthcare professionals,
mountain rescue teams, and anyone else with an
interest in these issues.
Mountains for Active Diabetics (MAD) is
a voluntary run group of diabetic adventurers from all
over the world - who all participate in outdoor
adventure sports - from international competitive fell
running and mountain biking to extreme big wall
climbing and Alpine or Himalayan mountains, to skiing
and hillwalking
Nikki Wallis, founder of MAD, strongly
believes that participation in outdoor adventure
sports develops skills and lifelong values of
self-reliance, confidence and motivation which are
essential to the successful daily management of
diabetes.
Over 1.4 million people in the United
Kingdom have diabetes, and it is estimated by the
Diabetes UK that this number is set to double by
2010. It is also estimated that another 1 million
people in the in the UK have diabetes but do not know
it.
Guest speakers who are all diabetic
include:- David Panofsky (USA), Marco and Sara Peruffo
(Italy), Vittorio Casiraghi (Italy), Jerry Gore (UK),
Stephen Posnett (UK) and Nikki Wallis (Wales) who
will be talking about the 2000 International Diabetic
Expedition to Aconcagua; presenting information that
was first delivered at the fifth World Congress on
Mountain Medicine and High Altitude Physiology in
April 2002; the 2002 Italian Diabetic Expedition to
Cho Oyu, big wall climbing in Borneo among other
exciting informative topics such as techniques of
managing diabetes successfully in the outdoor
environment.
