One:
Greetings Everyone, after a week in Kathmandu we have
jumped through all the necessary hoops and now depart
for base camp. Thomas and John, the last team members
turned up last night so with everyone here and keen to
move. We will head off to the airport at 5:30 am April
2nd for our flight to Lukla at 7500 feet. We sent
along 1500 kg of baggage this afternoon for weighing
and loading. The airport is technically closed for
repairs so all flights in are by charter helicopter.
We will be using the Puma 9 place model and with
baggage will require three trips to get our members,
staff and baggage to Lukla. With a bit of luck
the weather will hold long enough to enable us all to
be there by noon or thereabouts.
The trek to base camp should take about 7 days with
about 6 hours of walking each day which will include
elevation gains on average of about 1500 feet per day.
We will trek along the Dudh Kosi River which means the
river of milk thus named for its whitish color due to
the glacial scilicates it carries down from its
headwaters at the Khumbu glacier tongue. The
first couple days will find us in lush agricultural
valleys, gradually we will climb through the
Rhododendron forests and slowly out of the tree line
and onto the terminal moraine of the Khumbu Glacier,
which we will follow to base camp which is located at
about 18,000 feet just below the Khumbu Ice
Fall.
So we are off on our adventure. Members send
love and greetings to friends and loved ones. We
will do our best to stay in touch but please don't be
alarmed if you don't hear from us as communication is
not assured. Cheers, Gary
