Italian
climber Cesare Maestri, age 72, will attempt the Cho Oyu
|
| Expedition:
Italian
climber Cesare Maestri, age 72, will attempt the Cho Oyu
summit next spring. Maestri,
named "the Spider of the Dolomites", top
climber in the Sixties (Cerro Torre amongst all),
announced today he will try his first Himalayan ascent
to celebrate year 2002, "International Year of the
Mountains" for Unesco. "I
will carry a rainbow coloured peace flag with me" he
said "and I will dedicate this ascent to peace in
the world. US attack, last week, made me decide.
Mountain people are the same all over the world, I want
to witness friendship and cooperation across the
world". from:
Gigi Zoppello, Trento, Italy

Update
5/14/2002: We have several questions about this
expedition, so we asked our Italian friend and
reporter: "About Cesare Maestri: He will be there
in September to try Cho Oyu. He announced again his
attempt last week, during the Trento International
Mountain Film Festival. Also Sergio Martini will be
with him to help him on the way." Gigi Zoppello,
Trento, Italy
