Winter
Makalu 2000/2001
1-4-2001 Dispatch
Expedition
to Makalu
Everybody
goes up
We
welcomed the blizzard almost with relief. Despite the
frost (reaching 18 grades Celsius below zero) the
never-ending sound of coughing was almost history in
the base. The dust we used to breathe has
gone.
"Everybody
leave the tents and start climbing!"- this was
the first thing we heard in the morning from Krzysztof
Wielicki, the head of the expedition. "Storm
attack, storm attack, everybody on the track!" -
said our Napoleon, trying to wake up the battle spirit
among the tired team. The sun and beautiful weather
surely gave us energy. Two teams were already on the
way up. The first one was Gia Tortladze, Krzysztof
Liszewski and Piotr Snopczynski, who left yesterday.
Today's team included Maciej Pawlikowski and Jerzy
Natkanski. Wielicki along with Dariusz Zaluski and
Jarek Zurawski will climb up tomorrow. At the
beginning the action will develop slowly, because
reaching camp II takes three days. From that point
we will have to reach the Makalu La pass, which is the
most important point of attacking the summit. The
members of the expedition think that, weather
permitting, the real fight to reach the peak will
start right away. "It is time for the final
preparations" - said Krzysztof Wielicki to sum up
the discussion.
