Makalu
2002 lead by Juanito Oiarzabal
|
The
Spanish expedition by Juanito attempted the very hard
West Pillar route on Makalu this Spring. This very
difficult route was opened in 1971 by the French
climbers Robert Paragot and Yannick Seigneur and have
a very limited number of repetitions.
1980:
John Roskelley without oxygen
1984:
Marc Batard in solo
1991:
Carles Valles, Manu Badiola (died descending) and
Erhard Loretan.
The
Spanish expedition was sponsored by Al Filo de lo
Imposible, a Spanish TV show that intend to film the
climb. The members were:
Juanito
Oiarzabal, Juan Vallejo, Ferran Latorre, Jose Carlos
Tamayo, Josu Bereciartua
However,
the Al filo de lo imposible expedition is going home
without the summit. They had made a big effort last
Friday 24 May climbing from Camp II (6.500m) to Camp
III (7.350 m.) in very bad weather conditions, and
hard snow, but once arrived, they discovered that the
whole camp was destroyed by wind, so they must return
to camp II. The weather was very bad during the whole
expedition. Yesterday 27 May they had arrived to base
camp after a very difficult descent. Even the best
groups must have some chance with weather...
