- Everest Spring 2000: Featured
Expedition
EverestNews.com is featuring Byron
Smith and his expedition as one of our "featured" expeditions this Spring.
The CBC web site has an interview
with Denis Brown. Denis was a member of an commercial expedition to Everest in 1999 in
which a member died during one of the storms last year. Brown expresses some of his
opinions on his experience and the risks involved with commercial expeditions.
Check him out at Byron Smith www.cbc.ca/everest2000.
EverestNews.com Editorial Comment:
We should point out that few climbers on Everest in 2000 will be on commercial expeditions
of this type. It is true that some of these commercial expeditions sell their dispatches
to commercial web sites and therefore appear like they are "typical or the norm"
to some people. However, for better or worst, commercial expeditions on Everest are not
the typical expeditions on Everest, they are the minority by far.

- Everest Spring 2000: The Icefall appears to change hands.
KHUMBU ICE FALL UNDER SPCC
(SAGARMATHA POLLUTION CONTROL COMMITTEE)
Nepal's Ministry of Tourism has
entrusted the job of fixing the Khumbu Ice Fall for Climbing Expeditions to SPCC
(Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee) effective from this Spring Season. The Ice Fall
fixing job in the past used to be done by Scotland's Leading Mountaineer Entrepreneur, Mr.
Henry B. Todd.
While there has been proposal from
NMA (Nepal Mountaineering Association) also to take the responsibility of making /
maintaining Khumbu Ice Fall for Climbing Expeditions, Government has however, entrusted
the job to SPCC from this year.
Government officials maintain that
they have given the Ice Fall fixing job to SPCC for this season on trial basis. After
examining their work and assessing the reports from Mountaineering Teams, they will decide
who could be the best Party to do this Ice Fall job: SPCC or NMA.
Nepal Mountaineering Association is
keen to do Ice Fall job as they are the National Mountaineering Body of the country. They
are thinking of charging a reasonable per person fee to the Mountaineering Teams
crossing the Khumbu Ice Fall to climb Everest & Lhotse from South Side and channalize
the savings generated to NMA's other Environmental Projects and Training Activities.
Reported by Binita & Sangita at
HIMALAYA Center - Kathmandu / Nepal.
Please Note: With Henry Todd and
the icefall it is never done until it is done. Meaning others have attempted to take
control of the icefall from Henry Todd before, but Henry gains control back. We will see
what happens this time. Don't count Henry out until the count of 12.

Byron Smith is an experienced
climber from Vulcan, Alberta, who has climbed extensively in the Western Hemisphere. In
1998, as an independent climber on a British expedition, Smith reached the South Summit of
Everest (45 minutes from the peak) before having to turn back. Climbing with Smith are
climbers/cameramen Tim Rippel, from Nelson, BC and Brad Wrobleski from Canmore, AB. They
will be climbing with a seasoned team of 12 high altitude Sherpa guides. The all-Canadian
Everest 2000 team also includes communication coordinators John and Ann Armstrong from
Penticton, BC, education program expert Dr. Dave Irvine-Halliday, documentary producer
George Gallant from Lethbridge, AB and physician Virginia Robinson from Hamilton, ON.
The Everest 2000 teams depart for
Kathmandu, Nepal on March 15. Upon arrival, they fly to Lukla in the Khumbu Region and
trek to base camp at the foot of the Khumbu Glacier. From April 1 on, the team will
undergo a grueling process of climbing and acclimatization while their bodies adjust to
the altitude and thinner air. They expect to reach their goal, the Summit of Everest
sometime at the end of May.
