  • Everest Spring 2000: Byron Smith moving toward Everest !

March 20, 2000 from Kathmandu to Phakding: We woke up at 4:30 a.m. and heard the sound of showers being turned on in the rooms next door. It is the day we all were looking forward to, the flight to Lukla, and the start of our trek into Everest Basecamp. We loaded up the bus and departed to the airport where we went through the process of weighing all our luggage to be loaded onto a Twin Otter plane.

We were over our allowable baggage and had to send some of our bags on the next flight. After a long delay we finally departed at 10:00 a.m. and ascended through the polluted air, which hangs over Kathmandu. It did not take long for the Himalayan giants to appear before us, Brad and George were jockeying for position up front for the best photo shot. Way off in the distance we could see the long white snow plume blowing off of Mount Everest's summit.

One of the thrills of flying to Lukla is landing on the airstrip perched high on a mountain ridge. The elevation of Lukla is 9,200 ft (2,804 m), the airstrip has only one approach in, and angles up with the end of the strip being 300 ft higher than the beginning.

  • Everest Spring 2000: French Canadians, still having fun !

March 19, - Bernard: We are back to the small Tibetan village called Thiugompa. We made the trek around the lake Manasarovar, it was super! This circular route of roughly 115km allowed us to see people on holy treksIt takes these people approximately 60 days and we did it in 6 days. With each step, these people prostrate by kneeling and placing their heads all the way to the ground. They carry an apron in order to protect their knees and put shoes on their hands in order to avoid the abrasions. This is 100 times worse than to climb the St-Joseph Oratory on the knees!  We have one day of rest and one by in trek around the Mount Kailash. It will be superb.

Check them out at http://www.everestmillenium.qc.ca/jdb.asp for reports in French, video and more.

  • Everest Spring 2000: Dutch News

Frits Vrijlandt and Steven Le Poole, will attempt to climb Everest via the North ridge. When they succeed, they will be the first Dutchmen to do so.

A rough Translation: Frits, Joke, and Steven are busy with the things necessary before the departure of the expeditionOne week before departure on Friday, 24 March, the stress has really come on strong.  Joke says, "Everyone has all types of questions before we depart".  Here's what needs to happen before we go Amsterdam's Schiphol airport:  We need to take all the equipment for the expedition and carefully pack it for transport in the big, green barrels.  In total, we are taking six tons of equipment, after that, there's the tents and communications equipment that Tjitte de Wert, our cameraman, will carry by himself.  Another thing we've been doing is providing interviews to the journalists.   After all these organizational thing, Joke and Steven are still at work.  Not until the day before the departure, do we have a day free. Joke says that the first real rest day will be the day we are sitting in the airplane. "Then, I just want to not have to think about the organizational stuff".  At that point, we'll accept all the farewells from our friends and families.  "The warm hugs with 'take care' being said means we'll be careful" says Joke.

Three Dutch Climbers Frits Vrijlandt, Steven Le Poole, and Joke Groenendaal: http://www.everest.home.nl/ Joke will keep you updated. Check them out !
