EVEREST DISPATCH: Tuck & The Rum Doodle
On
May 10, 1990, Mark (Tuck) Tucker reached the summit of
Mt. Everest via the NE Ridge in Tibet as a member of
Jim Whittaker's Tri Nation Peace Climb (Russia, China
& USA). Since then, when Tuck has been asked
whether he's ever been to Nepal, his response has
been, "sure, I've been in Nepal, for a total of
about 31 minutes!" After a moment of confusion
and calculations by the inquisitor, Tuck shares that
he was in Nepal...while standing on the summit of Mt.
Everest!
On
March 23, 2001, Tuck was able to bring his 1990
Everest full circle when we all visited the famed Rum
Doodle restaurant in the middle of the Thamel
district. In this historical place, one can find a
museum of Himalayan relics, including some
"signature boards" where successful Everest
summit climbers sign "the board" to record
their awesome achievement. In a small ceremony, Tuck
walked behind the counter, and
the board, which has a locked glass cover, was opened.
With pen in hand, Tuck proudly signed the board and
recorded his '90 ascent. A crowed had assembled in
front of the counter, to watch him record history with
the dozen other summit climbers who had also signed
their names on the board. We all cheered when Tuck
turned around and beamed with a smile of quiet
content.
Interesting
enough, in the crowd, one of Tuck's 1990 Russian
teammates. They embraced one another in the noisy
place, and reminisced of their climb together some
years ago.
It
goes without saying...that we all hope to repeat
Tuck's ceremony upon our return to Kathmandu in late
May after this year's Everest expedition.
