Hello
from Kathmandu!
Well,
here we are, stuck in Kathmandu with tons of work to
do before we depart. Lots of gear to sort through, and
more importantly, government officials to debrief with
before we depart the country. It's our understanding
all such offices are closed for four more days, which
is totally understandable under the circumstances. In
addition, the military has imposed another curfew
today, from noon until mid-night, which means we are
confined to our hotel at least for today... there is
still lots of political actions around town
(spotty), and even the US embassy is recommending that
all US citizens leave Nepal ASAP (at least until
things quiet down). Yesterday, Dave, Francois, Leo and
three trekkers left Kathmandu, and Tuck, Max and Rob
will leave tomorrow. I'll "hold the
fort down," so to speak, and wait for the
government offices to re-open next week. We stay in
nice hotels and I've got a lot of good friends to look
after me here, so there's no worry...it's just a
little boring. I've been keeping busy with some small
packing (with what I've got here), and some expedition
paperwork.
There
is some good coverage of the activity here in KTM on
the BBC and cnn.com. All of the news coverage here has
been blacked out, so watching CNN and the BBC is our
only link to what's going on around the city. There's
no local TV or radio, so unless there's cable TV or
Internet connections...our typical "information
life" is a vacuum of blackness.
Stay
tuned for my next dispatch, where I'll share details
of our drive from the airport (don't want to do that
again!). Also to follow, will be the details of DAY 1
of our summit climb, from Base Camp to Camp Two.
