Moores' Plans for 2002 and a case of bad
reporting -

Tom
Moores, summited Lhotse in spring 2001. However,
Tom had a tough time and almost died. His story,
in his own words, is at the end of this piece.
Interestingly enough Tom has widely been reported to be
going to K2 in 2002. Frankly, this seemed
strange to EverestNews.com coming so soon after Tom's difficult summit of
Lhotse in 2001. We asked Tom what his
plans were when we were told that it was reported that he was
going to K2 in 2002.... Some of these
"articles" also said Tom would not climb
K2 with Gary Pfisterer.

These
stories smelled like bad reporting to us. A
story, that every time it was
"copied," a little more got wrong. EverestNews.com wonders why they never think of asking the climbers
rather than just copying the reports of others. Hum, what
an idea :)
Sadly,
people can be hurt by these reports
with false statements... Ok, on to what Tom is
really doing in 2002 !!!
"Sadly,
the only plans to attempt K2 are long term. I have a
slight financial problem at the moment, and also the
political situation in that region isn't looking
particularly stable. My plans are as follows. I may be
taking a year out of university from June '03 Till
Sept '04. If that happens then I need to justify it to
my university, i.e., it has to be beneficial to my
studies. So I plan to do a study on the
physiological affects of altitude. I'm studying Sports
Science (outdoor activities) at university. This I
will hope to do while climbing, over the course of
that year.
Everest,
K2 and Kanchenjunga. Probably Kanchenjunga in the
autumn of '03 Everest in the spring of '04 and K2 in
the summer of '04, back to back with the Everest
ascent. It would be very ambitious but I reckon I may
be able to do it. I would get student loans, as if I
was a student. Hopefully I could then get sponsorship
from both aspects. The study side of it and the
climbing side.
I'd
probably end up doing K2 and Kanch with Gary
(Pfisterer) and then Everest with Daniel Mazur or someone like that. I haven't really thought about the
logistics yet. Best wishes Tom Moores
On
the bad reporting, " I
honestly don't know how people got the idea I was
going to attempt K2 this year. It is possible that
when interviewed recently I have said I wanted to do
K2 next. Maybe that has been misunderstood! Maybe it
has also been misunderstood from your
website but I can't see how? Where does it say I'm
planning to attempt K2 this year??"
Thanks
