Three Titles From The Mountaineers Books Win Awards

The 2001 Banff Mountain Book Festival:

On the evening of November 1, awards were presented at the 8th Annual Banff Mountain Book Festival held in Banff, Alberta, Canada. Three titles published by The Mountaineers Books—Kiss or Kill, Fifty Favorite Climbs, and The High Himalaya—were selected as winners in three categories.

Text Box: Kiss or Kill: Confessions of a Serial Climber by Mark Twight won the Jon Whyte Award for Mountain Literature.
Text Box: Best Book—Mountain Exposition, Fifty Favorite Climbs: The Ultimate North American Tick List, by Mark Kroese Jury member Maria Coffey comments, “I like the way we get to know each climber, and learn about their chosen climb through both their personal experience of it and the comprehensive route description.”
Text Box: The High Himalaya, Art Wolfe (photography) and Peter Potterfield (text), The Mountaineers Books (ISBN 0-89886-841-6), won the award for Best Book—Mountain Image, sponsored by Spotted Dog Press, Bishop, California—$500. “Visually, a superb book,” says jury member Maria Coffey. “Wolf brilliantly portrays so many facets of Himalayan culture and landscape. This is the work of an artist with a great passion for the places and people he captures on film.”

A pre-screening committee selected 34 finalists from 122 entries in the eighth annual competition. Entries were received from 10 countries including Canada, the USA, the UK, Australia, Germany, India, Italy, Singapore, Slovenia, and South Africa.

The Banff Mountain Book Festival is the only festival of its kind in North America. The festival, which runs in conjunction with the Banff Mountain Film Festival, is a celebration of mountain literature, bringing together writers, publishers, editors, photographers and readers. Featuring guest speakers, readings, seminars, a book fair, book signings and launches, the festival offers a wide spectrum of experiences for the participants and the audience. The festival is a program of Mountain Culture at The Banff Centre. Mountain Culture programming promotes understanding and appreciation of the world’s mountain places by creating opportunities for people to share—and find inspiration in—mountain experiences, ideas and visions. The 8th Annual Banff Mountain Book Festival, presented by Canadian Mountain Holidays, was sponsored by Eagle Creek Travel Gear, National Geographic Society, Patagonia, Dunham Bootmakers, and Chevy Avalanche.
