Nepal News: Press Release from Nepal Tourism Board 02/28/02

Post Acham Incident Press Release

Nearly after a three months of declaring emergency by His Majesty’s Government of Nepal, life in Nepal is near to normal. Major tourist places like the Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara, Chitwan, Lumbini, Annapurna region, etc continue to receive tourists from all over the world. Tour operators, journalists and tourists interviewed by the Nepal Tourism Board after the declaration of Emergency have affirmed that their holiday in Nepal, both in Kathmandu and in up-country areas, are going well with no unexpected logistical or security concerns. So far, tourists have not been the target or victim of the insurgency problem. International online carriers like Royal Nepal Airlines Singapore Airlines, Thai, Transavia, Qatar, and others are operating on smoothly as scheduled.

The recent insurgency of Accham district in Far Western region of Nepal on 16th of February 2002 is definitely an unexpected and tragic incident that has caused a big loss for Nepal. As this area is not currently a popular tourist destination and even areas surrounding this do not have tourism activities like trekking, rafting and others. Major tourist areas in Nepal are enjoying the tourism activities without any hindrances. As usual, tourists have been re-confirming tour plans to Nepal and we humbly request all the incoming tourist to use the services rendered by the Government registered authentic tour, trekking or rafting agencies for quality, reliable and safe services.

International seminars, symposiums, workshops and conferences are taking place as scheduled in Nepal. Kathmandu is all set to host Kathmandu Jazz Festival: Jazzmandu to be organized from 12 to 23 March 2002. This is the second mega event after the successful conclusion of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation Summit. Nepal is all set to host the biggest event in the Jazz calendar of South Asia, featuring bands and soloist from the UK, Australia, Dubai, Australia, and India, along with Nepal’s own jazz quartet. Nepal and its visitors can experience an innovative musical fusion of east and west in the heart of the Himalayas.

His Majesty's Government of Nepal has announced Destination Nepal Campaign 2002-2003 (DNC 2002-2003) with the twofold objectives of creating massive tourism awareness inside the country and effective international promotion of Nepal by repositioning the country's image as a reliable, safe and attractive destination. Some of the major programs incorporated with the DNC are the "International Year of Mountains 2002"; "Mt. Everest Golden Jubilee Celebrations 2002-2003" commemorating the first conquest of Mt. Everest in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary and late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa; "International Year of Eco Tourism 2002"; "Visit South Asia Year 2003". Various festivals /events, religious and other celebrations will also feature during the DNC.

Note this is a press release from the Nepal Tourism Board.
