Three
Australians and one Israeli are missing and presumed dead,
after a massive avalanche in the Modi River area of
the Annapurna region in central Nepal. They state,
"Next of kin have been notified." The
Australians were members of a support trek
accompanying the Australian Army Alpine Association
Tenix Everest 2001 Expedition which was undertaking a
ten-day familiarization and acclimatisation trek in
Nepal before proceeding to Tibet to climb Everest at
the end of this month. The group of three missing
Australians was walking ahead of the main group when
struck by the avalanche which appears to have been
caused by ice cliffs fracturing off Hinchuli Peak.
Locals in the area are reported to have stated that
they had never seen an avalanche of this size in this
location before. The track is walked by hundreds of
trekkers and is one of the most popular commercial
trekking trails in Nepal. Nepali authorities have been
notified of the accident and the Australian Ambassador
to Nepal, Mr. Crispin Conroy has also been in contact
with the team. All
other members of the expedition, including the
climbing team are reported safe and are returning to
Kathmandu to regroup and consider the future of the
expedition.

Sources
report to EverestNews.com that the Australian deaths
were a couple (he was an Australian Air Force officer)
and their eight year old daughter. This is a very
dangerous sport, one must not lose sight of
this.
Sad
news on the way to Everest for the Australian Army Alpine Association
Tenix Everest 2001 Expedition. Unconfirmed sources are
reporting that at least part of the Australian
expedition plans to continue, along with Mark Auricht
and Duncan Chessell. Mark and Duncan joined up with
the Australian expedition after initially planning on
attempting Everest from the South (Nepal) side.
Update:
The dead bodies of 32 year old Michelle Hackket and
her eight year old daughter Kathleen Hackket have been
recovered. The search for Peter Szypula and Israeli
national Noam Hevlin continues.
A sad
story, that should remind us all that this is a very
dangerous sport.
