 K2 2003: ANDALUCÍA K2 EXPEDITION

Photos

Andalucía, June 17, 2003: THE ANDALUCIA K2 PASSES 'HOUSE' CHIMNEY AND ESTABLISHES CAMP 2 AT 6,750 METERS OF ALTITUDE

Until now the Andalucian expedition is the only one working on the equipment of the route.

The members of the Andalucian expedition, who try get to the summit of K2, have contacted the technicians of Deporte Andaluz by phone.  Most of the group is at Base Camp, in contact by radio with three members of the advanced team - Manuel Salazar, Fernando Fernández-Vivancos and Juanjo Garra - who have installed some tents at Camp 2 today. The Andalucian expedition, sponsored by Consejería de Turismo y Deporte through Deporte Andaluz has passed a characteristic element of the route of the Abruzzos Spur, called the 'House' Chimney.  Once they have passed, the second high altitude camp has been installed at 6,750 meters of altitude and will be the location from where the real summit attacks will start. The Andalucian team is very happy because a very important step in the work schedule has been taken.

For the day of Wednesday 18, Javier Sánchez and Amparo Ortega are planned to climb along with their high altitude carrier to finish stocking equipment in camp 2, in spite of a brief bad weather.  "Until now - Javier Sánchez says - the forecasts that we get from meteosat have been fine, but after 6,000 meters you are in a different world."  It is also forecasted the arrival of the expedition of Carlos Soria, from Madrid, and another commercial expedition from Switzerland. In the Base Camp zone there is also another Czech expedition and one made of French, Canadian and some other nationality climbers, with whom an agreement is being made about the ascent route rigs, which have only been handled by the Andalucian team.

All the members of the Andalucian team are in good shape although with some computer problem that prevents them from sending the pictures of their great adventure to K2.  The expeditioneers wondered about the score of the last Málaga - Sevilla match and which team will win the Liga, as well about the scores of the C. B. Unicaja against Pamesa in the semifinals of the Liga ACB and some other important news.
