Dispatch Two:
The carriers have gone, blessed peace, but we are completely alone at Nanga
Parbat's base camp. There are no other expeditions in sight and the Kazak
group will not arrive until tomorrow or day after tomorrow, ahead of Lafaille. So
between cooks and climbers we are just fifteen souls. Fifteen who were
startled when an earthquake greeted us just after organizing the camp.
The tents have oscillated perceptibly and then an avalanche has been heard, at
first hidden by the clouds, and then very visible on the walls of the Mazzeno
ridge. Three more avalanches started by the breaking of big seracs have
joined the first, making a cloud that blew winds over base camp. Fortunately
nothing has moved on the Diamir wall of Nanga Parbat. All this has spoiled a
precious day.
Tomorrow
we will place the first material depot at the bottom of the wall, at 4,800
meters, 700 meters above base camp. We'll also mark the glacier's route to
start again the routine of these expeditions. With the Kazaks we will be 14
working in shifts, without high altitude carriers, but we are a platoon for
that matter. Simone
