The killing of America reporter Daniel Pearl in Pakistan

In response to our editorial on the killing of America reporter Daniel Pearl in Pakistan and requests we have received some responses from Pakistan:

Nazir Sabir condemns Pearl’s Murder

I learned about Daniel Pearl’s death while I am still touring North America assuring people that Pakistan was a tourist friendly country. It still is. But I am deeply shocked and hurt by the dastardly and barbaric killing of the WSJ correspondent. No words are enough to condemn this cruel, reckless act. All sections of my people from the President of Pakistan to the commonest man in the street have expressed their abhorrence of this crime against humanity. There is unanimous demand to catch the criminals and bring them to justice by awarding them exemplary punishment.

Pearl’s work as a journalist was of a humanitarian nature as he was working as a bridge between people and was promoting understanding between divergent cultures. Unfortunately while pursuing a story he fell among a bunch of dangerous criminals. He had much faith in his work. In his enthusiasm he kept his movements secret from security agencies responsible for journalists’ safety. His death is a great loss to his profession. My colleagues and I deeply mourn his tragic death, offer our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends and condemn this despicable cowardly crime in the strongest terms and demand that all necessary measures be taken in future to ensure the safety of journalists working on risky assignments. May he rest in peace and his example give courage to others to pursue his mission of promoting understanding and peace in the world.

Sincerely, Nazir Sabir

From a reporter, who publishes some articles in the Nation in Pakistan and provides information to Greg Mortenson, who publishes various articles, we received this:

Assalmao Alaikum (Peace Be With You)

Ms Sue, Daniel walked into a trap and this unfortunate incident happened, May Allah rest his soul in eternal peace. Ameen

I hope the contents of the tape that are mentioned in the reports are also known to you. The Jewish factor can not be ignored as it has been pointed out so many times by so many people but to date it has never been taken in to full account by the authorities. He was a seasoned professional, well respected and admired. Risk happens to be part and parcel of the profession which makes the man, tenderfeet and green horns simply can't make their mark in journalism as there is intense competition. He walked in to a trap and met a tragic end which is very unfortunate and probably same is the case with 'soft targets' in Afghanistan as they are there and these targets include mostly women and children.

Sue followed up,

Asem, What do you mean by: " He walked in to a trap and met a tragic end which is very unfortunate and  probably same is the case with 'soft targets' in Afghanistan as they are there and these targets include mostly women and children."

and

"The Jewish factor can not be ignored as it has been pointed out so many times by so many people but todate it has never been taken in to full account by the authorities."

Assalamo Alaikum,

Ms Sue, Daniel Pearl's murder is a tragedy and it should not have happened, he was good professional and what is being heard about the gentleman, he never deserved that and my heart goes out to his family. May Allah (God) rest his soul in eternal peace. Ameen!

I don't have any first hand information about Mr. Pearl and I will not speculate as Karachi is 2000 kilometers from the mountains. But would you enlighten me please on the status of 120 Pakistanis who are illegally detained for the last four months in Virginia, USA without legal representation, any charges or warrants.

Best Regards
asem
