Everest 2001 Presented By EverestNews.com: Paul F. Giorgio

May 2, 2001

After spending one night at Camp 3 on April 26, Paul completed his acclimatization process and returned to Base Camp on April 29.  Today Paul continues to rest at Base Camp waiting for his window of opportunity to plan his first attempt at the summit. The tragic death of Babu Sherpa has temporarily halted his plans to begin his ascent towards the summit until sometime this week. On a positive note, old friends and new acquaintances (John Erickson, Jim and Shellie Bronson, Amon and Terry Enburg) arrived at Base Camp on May 1 to visit with Paul.

Our dear friend Ruth Davis, who was also part of the trekking team did not make it to Base Camp.  Suffering from mild altitude sickness, Ruthie made the intelligent decision to remain at Gorak Shep, the last village before Base Camp.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Ruthie for good health and a safe return home. Paul's desire to climb to the summit of the Everest began while trekking with these folks.  In October 1998 Paul joined a group of people trekking to Everest Base Camp. Jim & Shellie Bronson, Ruth Davis, and John Erickson were among that group. It was then that Paul saw the awesomeness of Everest for the first time. From that moment Paul made a decision to reach Everest's summit. The rest is history. While the visit was brief, it was just what Paul needed.  In addition to boosting his spirits, they delivered a package from home containing, among other items, cards, letters and photos from family and friends back home.  Special thanks to John, Ruthie, Jim, Shellie, Amon and Terry for being the highlight of Paul's 2001 Everest Expedition to date. He was thrilled to see them.
