is an Everest South side expedition led by Mr. Gotz Wiegand from Germany.
There
are 5 members of the expedition. The expedition is supported by Asian Trekking.

Update
5/25/2001:
The Saxonian team with Jorg Stingel and Thomas Turpe started on
May 22nd, 1.a.m Nepalese time in camp 4 to reach the summit
Around midday Turpe turned back for security reasons. Stingel
went on alone and reached the summit of the Everest at
about 4.pm Nepalese time on May 22nd.
He had no Sherpa with him and did
not use oxygen. He returned save to camp 4,
where he was awaited from expedition-chief Goetz Wiegand and
Thomas Turpe.
Today, on May
25th, in the afternoon hours, all three arrived save in the
Basecamp and gave us this information via sat phone to Germany.
The second group of the Saxonian expedition, Frank Meutzner
and Olaf Zill (without Sherpa) decided yesterday (May 24th) to
give up their summit attempt and are on their way back from
camp 4 to the Base Camp.

Update
5/23/2001:
Via Satellite phone Mr. Jorg Stingel (39) from Dresden/Germany
reached the Summit of the Everest yesterday and returned later safe to Camp 4. Two other members of the
group, Mr. Frank Meutzner and Mr. Olaf Zill are today on their
way from Camp 3 to Camp 4 and try to reach the summit on May
24th.
Jorg Stingel
is the first Saxonian and the first former East German to
reach Summit of Everest. Yours sincerely

Update
5/23/2001: Mr. Jorg
Stingl reached the summit on the 22nd of May without
using oxygen.
A second Saxonian climber, Mr. Thomas Turpe, who was with him,
was forced to turn around in about 8700 meters height and
returned to Camp 4, where the expedition leader, Goetz Wiegand
(41) was waiting for them. The last two members of the group,
Mr. Frank Meutzner and Mr. Olaf Zill are today on their way
from camp 3 to camp 4 and try to reach the summit on May 24th,
also without oxygen.
