Everest
2001 Expedition: Polytechnic University of Valencia
Three
climbers from Valencia, Spain will attempt Everest
from the Standard North Col Route. This group has
participated in three expeditions together and has
worked to become a close-knit team. In the Himalayas, two of the three
summited Cho Oyu (8,201) and, most recently, they had
an unsuccessful expedition to Manaslu. This
was caused by bad weather. Of note is
that they were accosted by terrorists during the trek
to Manaslu!
Day
18 of April: This
has been so far one of the coldest days. During the
breakfast, our milk froze while we anointed
the toasts. Sergi's computer (Sergi Mingote), the
Catalan that shares permission with us, has frozen and
doesn't work anymore. For luck, we put it in the sleeping bag
during the night and so far, it has
survived.
At
noon it began to snow, and we have had to find refuge
for ourselves in the dinning room of the
Colombians, quite more welcoming than ours. Our
cook has begun to suffer symptoms of illness,
probably due to high elevation, so if it
continues tomorrow he will have to
descend toward the Chinese Base Camp until he
recovers. We have gone to bed as soon as the sun
is setting and the thermometer marked - 15Ί C.
April
19:
After
one night that has touched -25Ί C in the ABC it
has dawned with a splendid sun. Although we
continue under zero, today will be more
profitable. We organize material so that the
Sherpas can ascend to Camp 1 (7100 m.),
while we continue acclimatizing in ABC. Ours
sherpas, that live at 5000 meters, they are
already totally acclimatized and they will have
to wait a couple of days more to have our
collaboration in altitude.
April
20:
Today
we have begun the work in altitude. David and
Sergi have ascended to the Camp 1 (7100 m.).
There they will spend the night, accompanied by
the Colombian expedition, to which the strong
winds have made fly the tents where they planned
to sleep. Tomorrow, Jorge and Endika will ascend
at the Camp 1 to sleep there and to continue the
following day the way to Camp 2 (7800 m.)
