Everest 2001 Expedition: Polytechnic University of Valencia

Three climbers from Valencia, Spain will attempt Everest from the Standard North Col Route. This group has participated in three expeditions together and has worked to become a close-knit team. In the Himalayas, two of the three summited Cho Oyu (8,201) and, most recently, they had an unsuccessful expedition to Manaslu.  This was caused by bad weather. Of note is that they were accosted by terrorists during the trek to Manaslu!

May 1st

We are gradually getting accustomed to life at Base Camp.  Apart from the odd cold our general physical state has been improving with the loss of altitude. So it has followed that our cook has adapted to our culinary tastes.  We spend the day doing what you can at this altitude: resting, more resting and preparing the next ascent to Advanced Base Camp… We continue to drive away the boredom with games of cards and conversations with other expeditions.

May 2nd: Today Sergi the Catalan and four members of the Colombian national expedition arrived at BC, which has livened things up a little. They have reported to us today the situation at ABC, about who is going up to Camp 1, which other expedition is equipping the route to Camp III and by when they will have forecast the commercial expeditions trying for the summit. The fact is, that the news on Everest is full of rumours, comments and insinuations, but the real news come only from within, only individuals know when they will go up or try to go up to the summit.

At the moment we are not too worried about checking the weather forecasts issued, our plan is to stay here in BC for a few more days..  In any case, the weather is not too good for other expeditions, and few people are getting going past CII.  Everyone is talking about the possibility of a change in the weather when the moon phase changes… Everyone is waiting, but we have no clear indication that this will happen. Well we’ll see…when the moon changes…

May 3rd: We wake to quite a bad day, which does not improve throughout the morning, but it fails to dampen our spirits.  The atmosphere at BC has got a lot better, we eat with the Columbians and Sergi, we spend the evening with the Al Filo’s expedition, with whom we have made some good friends… They love to see how people so young and with little means have the same objective as them and we benefit by informing the University Polytechnic of Valencia of the high circles of climbing.

May 4th: It has snowed today.  Another day of bad weather and the forecast is bad for tomorrow as well.  We are not disappointed, but we know that the options for the summit pass by a period of more or less good weather.  At BC between our upset stomachs and the colds, we escape nothing, but we know it is the least we have to pay to the Goddess Mother of the mountains for trying to climb her... Besides, there is nothing like the loss of weight and the month of discomfort that need to be tolerated at BC.  What is clear is that no one here seems fooled, we just try to keep going through the bad part of trying to ascend the tallest mountain in the world.
