Four
British and American climbers attempting the
original Chinese route, the Northeast ridge in
alpine style to
the central summit, traversing the summit ridge, to
the main summit
if conditions allow us. Mike O Brien USA, Phil
Crampton USA, Chris Fox UK and Owen Tomkins UK
plan to depart Katmandu on the 23rd April for
Shishapangma advanced base camp.
" We originally had
seven members for the expedition, but three members (2
American and 1 British) have dropped out due to
economic and other fears since the September 11
attacks. We notified the Chinese Mountaineering
Association of our plans before the attacks, so we
have our own permit. Due to my familiarization with
the CMA they are allowing us to allow extra climbers
to join our expedition and permit to help us share the
expedition expenses. We
plan to use no Sherpas. Our base camp and advanced
base camp will be staffed by a local Tibetan cook. We
will use an additional Tibetan cook boy if the team
numbers increase. We would like to thank our sponsors
especially Mike at Sierra Designs for his continued
support."
Yours
sincerely, Phil Crampton
