When South African film producer Sean
Wisedale summited Mount Everest he was both disappointed
and ecstatic.
His six-person team had prepared long and hard for the
attempt at Everest. They climbed Mount McKinley in Alaska, as a trial and to
build strength and endurance. However with some team members only a few
hundred meters from the summit five of the six decided that they’d had enough
of Everest’s infamous weather and abandoned the attempt. Wisedale felt that he
was strong enough and continued on to the summit after joining a British team.
Wisedale is the fourth South African to make it to the top
of the world’s tallest mountain. As a member of the Discovery Everest 2003
team Wisedale had hoped to summit the peak a day earlier to mark exactly 50
years after the first successful summit by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary
and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay.
Wisedale was a day late, but elated nonetheless. Sean is now
off to
Mount
Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, Africa (19,340ft/5,895m) to finish the
Seven Summits.
