Broad
Peak Winter 2003 Expedition
|
 |
Update 2/1/2003: The
team of 6 climbers the 29th January under a mist
of snow and wind reached the base camp at around
5,000 meters. Yesterday the helicopter came to
drop off supplies necessary for the climbers so
finally they can eat in a tent and be more warm
(even if the temperature still under zero). The
cloud still covers the sky but tomorrow they are
thinking to start moving upwards to have a look of
the way to follow in the future. They are all fine
but the temperature still going down.... their
hope is that will rise in the next few days.

The
local name of Broad peak is Faichan Kangri. The
height of main peak is 8047 meters/26,401ft. It
is called Broad Peak because of its breadth at
the top. Broad
Peak is one of the 8000 meters peaks which
towers above the Concordia at the heart of the
Karakoram range. It lies on the Pakistan/China
frontier between K2 and the Gasherbrum peaks and
was first climbed by four Austrians in 1957,
including Kurt Diemberger and Herman Buhl.
