Broad
Peak Winter 2003 Expedition
|
 |
Update 2/4/2003:
Silvio phoned this
morning.
Yesterday the expedition established Camp I at
5800 meters. The climbers have been obliged to
installing fixed ropes along the route for about
400 meters as the ice and fresh snow, after the
strong wind of the last few days, make the way
more dangerous than usual. During this first walk
they transport most of the equipment that they
will need in the future. The sunshine is in the
sky but it is still very cold. In the afternoon
they were back to BC and they found a surprise,
the two stoves installed inside the tent where
they are normally eat were out.... probably the
gasoline is frozen inside!
Today they spent
the day in BC making many shoots necessary for the
television program. Their program for the next
days is going tomorrow on Camp I and spend the
night over there and the day after trying to reach
the platform where they will be able to installed
Camp II.
Naturally all
depending of the condition of the weather. |

The
local name of Broad peak is Faichan Kangri. The
height of main peak is 8047 meters/26,401ft. It
is called Broad Peak because of its breadth at
the top. Broad
Peak is one of the 8000 meters peaks which
towers above the Concordia at the heart of the
Karakoram range. It lies on the Pakistan/China
frontier between K2 and the Gasherbrum peaks and
was first climbed by four Austrians in 1957,
including Kurt Diemberger and Herman Buhl.
