The South Face of Nuptse Autumn 2003

Elite climbers Valeri Babanov and Yuri Koshelenko are attempting the South Face of Nuptse this Autumn 2003.

Nuptse: Willie and Damian Benegas

Expedition on the South face of the Mt. Nuptse is beginning

Our expedition is beginning !!!!! So, now we are in Kathmandu. We are OK! But we are a little bit tired.

Today, it was so long day and night. We left Moscow yesterday at 18:50 PM and we arrived in Kathmandu just today morning at 08:00 AM. So, it was about 14 hours without stopping and with change a planes in Dhaka.

And also we had to fly about one hour around Kathmandu with no possibility to make landing. The pilots told us because it was bad weather in the airport area.

Today was a Sunday... so it was not possible to do a lot of things. Tomorrow will be a very busy day... in the morning we are going to buy food and some equipment. In the afternoon we will go to the Ministry of the Tourism to get a permit ascent briefing. We will fly to Lukla on the Tuesday, 16 in the morning.

In this evening we met with Fabrizio and his partner named Billy. They are Americans. Both guys are so nice. Our Base Camps will be located at 5200 meters and we will be able to associate there without problems. We will be feeling not so lonely.

But anyway we will be climbing different routes. They are not decided yet which route they will climb. Maybe a new one. The have a good high altitude experience. They leave Kathmandu tomorrow to Lukla and then we will meet in Dingboche or in Base Camp of Nuptse.

Valeri Babanov, Yuri Koshelenko.
