Reporting Deaths on Everest
|
Editorial Comment: For those of you following Everest coverage
for the first time, you should know several false deaths have been reported in
the last 4 years by various sources. From Zeddy, to Jaime
Viρals, to Russians climbers, to George last year; numerous climbers
have been reported dead by others when they were NOT!
EverestNews.com reviews this
issue with the expeditions/climbers we work with before the climb.
EverestNews.com holds or deletes information on climbers deaths until the
information is confirmed from the mountain and time has passed for the
families to be notified. EverestNews.com has never reported a climber dead in
error, and will continue not to rush news of deaths from the mountain.
Unfortunately, many others do
not confirm deaths on Everest before reporting, nor do they wait until
families can be notified. The dispatches or reports are written by various
people from climbers, to expedition doctors (which should know better), to
just people visiting base camp, to people on other teams. Why others feel the
need to rush out the news of deaths is unknown to us and causes many people
much pain over the years.
Let's pray others use better
judgment in 2003 and the years ahead.
