Everest 2002 Summits: The bit of Controversy...

When is a Summit, not a Summit?

NatGeo had 2 permits to climb Everest this spring 2002. One for the West ridge and one for the south east ridge route. The south east ridge permit had 6 members and the west ridge permit had 4 members. Pete Athans, as you can see below was listed on both permits, and was listed as the leader on both permits. Brent Bishop was only on the west ridge permit. The south east ridge permit could have been filed with 7 members with Brent's name added for the same cost, but was not. The permit was only filed for 6 members.

S.No Name of the Peak Name of the Team Leader Country Total Member
14 Sagarmatha (8848 m) National Geographic Everest Expedition Mr. Peter Athans U.S.A. 6
15 Sagarmatha (8848 m) 2002 American West Ridge Expedition Mr. Peter Athans U.S.A. 4

Brent Bishop went ahead and climbed via the Col, despite the fact that he was not on the South east ridge permit. In EverestNews.com's opinion, Brent Bishop summited Everest without a doubt! There are no questions! He stood on the Summit of Everest on May 25, 2002!

Apparently, someone (who does not seem to want to take credit for it), reported Brent's Summit along with the others and the 2 Hungarians (when there was only one) to the Ministry of Tourism in Nepal (see the honest Hungarians story...).

Brent's summit, technically illegal, worried some on the mountain. Sources have stated to EverestNews.com, that because of this "worry" and "the possible 25K ($25,000) fee". The Ministry of Tourism in Nepal was told that Brent did not Summit Everest.

The Ministry of Tourism in Nepal have not reported Brent's Summit. Why would they report Brent's Summit when they were informed he did not Summit!!!! It should be noted, the Ministry of Tourism in Nepal has not given the "official reason".

EverestNews.com sources in Nepal, tell EverestNews.com that the Ministry of Tourism in Nepal are aware of what happened.

NatGeo has also reported Brent's Summit. So it looks like the NatGeo expedition is in a bit of a pickle.

Editorial Note: We have waited several days to report this story, hoping things would clear up, but apparently they have not... The Nat Geo should simply pay the $25K to the Ministry of Tourism in Nepal, apologize and move on...

The truth will set you free!
