Extreme Everest 2001 Expedition
Dispatch: April
30th, 2001:
Expedition
member John Dunlop (Australia), became seriously
overdue on the walk down from Advanced Base Camp
to Base Camp yesterday. The Sherpa staff member
accompanying him down arrived at BC saying that
John was not well and was barely able to walk.
We immediately sent a search party out who found
him exhausted some 3 miles from camp along the
dry glacier moraine. The Doctor from the neighboring
British RAF Mountain Rescue Everest Expedition
attended, and with the very welcome assistance
of the RAF rescue team, John was carried in to
Base Camp. John spent the night under the care
of the RAF Doctor being treated for dehydration,
a chest infection and possible slight HAPE.
Though he had recovered somewhat by morning he
was evacuated that evening by jeep to Kathmandu
via Tingri. Thanks to the assistance of the RAF
Mountain Rescue Team and their Doctor, who
luckily was at BC, John is expected to make a
full recovery.
Dispatch:
May 1st, 2001:
1st
May: All team members and Sherpas have returned
to Base Camp for a brief rest before returning,
probably within the next few days, to complete
the build-up before starting summit bids.
