Amazon comments: "Because it is
there" is the reason so many men and women have risked death to climb Mount Everest,
the tallest mountain on earth. NOVA follows a scientific investigation of high-altitude
physiology in Everest: The Death Zone, which examines the biological and psychological
changes experienced by a group of climbers during their ascent. Jodie Foster's narration
accompanies the team as the NOVA photographers capture the stark, alien beauty of the
mountain; the drama reaches a crescendo on the descent as it becomes unclear whether or
not an ill climber will make it. Well worth watching by anyone interested in mountain
climbing or the limits of human endurance, Everest: The Death Zone is at once cautionary
and inspiring. --Rob Lightner

- Amazon Review: Breathtaking cinematography and vintage
footage focus on a small Sherpa village in Nepal where Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing
Norgay reunite to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their conquest of Mount Everest's
summit. The first men to reach they summit, Sir Edmund and Norgay are also clearly
friends. The genuine esteem between Sir Edmund and his family and residents of Kungbu,
Nepal, is refreshing after the stories of numerous wealthy tourists' attempts to climb
Everest, where Sherpas are mentioned in passing like colonial resources to be bought. One
of the most remarkable features of this beautiful and educational video is the unusual
insider perspective into the inner world of Sherpa culture, into the homes and families
and monastic life of these high-altitude dwellers. Sir Edmund is a revered and popular
figure in the Sherpa communities where he has devoted decades to constructing schools and
empowering villagers. In addition to discussing the historic first conquest of Everest and
the changes both the Hillary family and the Sherpa communities in Nepal have experienced
in the last 30 years, this video is a rich cultural documentary of the Sherpa way of life.
This video, part of the National Geographic video series, is like the triumphant other
side of the Everest story for anyone who has enjoyed Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air: A
Personal Account of the Mount Everest Disaster. --Tara Chace
Video Description: On May 28, 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay
became the first men to conquer Mount Everest. They risked their lives for the honor of
standing where no human had ever before: at the summit of the highest mountain peak in the
world. Now, more than 30 years later, Hillary and his climbing companion return to Everest
to celebrate their historic ascent. Complete with breathtaking footage from the 1953
expedition, RETURN TO EVEREST is a tribute to the brave men who tamed this famous
mountain, as well as the Sherpa people of Nepal who helped these pioneers achieve their
goal.

Amazon: Reviews: Michael Biehn plays a
Seattle attorney who talks his friend, a physics instructor (Matt Craven), into joining a
party with plans to climb the tallest and least accessible mountain in the world, K-2.
Biehn's arrogant character immediately bumps noggins with the tour's leader (Raymond J.
Barry) and the latter's strong-willed girlfriend (Patricia Charbonneau). But when various
disasters begin to strike at the group, cooperation ensues, followed by assorted acts of
heroism, friendship, and self-sacrifice under almost unimaginable conditions of lethal
distress. Based on a play that examined the view on human values from a perch far above
the world most of us know, K-2 surrounds that essential drama with extraordinary
location footage. Director Franc Roddam (Quadrophenia) succeeds very well at
turning a thoughtful piece into a fine action movie--and vice versa. --Tom Keogh

From Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide:
A
Seattle assistant D. A. (brash) and his physics-prof pal (gentle) attempt to climb the
world's steepest and most remote mountain. Gritty outdoor expansion of Patrick Meyers'
play, which won a Tony for its impressive mountain set; magnificent outdoor footage
compensates for that, but not for the stock movie characterizations. Film never tops its
first fifteen minutes, which are spellbinding.
Synopsis: Two friends, one brash (Taylor) and one
cautious (Harold), join a millionaire's mountain-climbing expedition in an attempt on the
world's second-highest peak, K2. The mountain's reputation for danger soon proves to be
true, leaving Taylor and Harold to make the final assault alone.
Video Description: Two friends risk it all to climb
the legendary "Savage Mountain" in northern Pakistan, unaware that the only
thing standing between themselves and sure death is the loyalty of friendship.
Video Annotation: The title, "K2", refers
to Karakoram Peak 2, the second highest mountain in the world, at 28,250 feet.
"K2" originally appeared as a one-act Broadway play. Written by Patrick Meyers,
the play featured only two characters, Taylor (played by Jeffrey De Munn) & Harold
(Jay Patterson). The setting won a Tony for designer Ming Cho Lee and featured a 55-foot
styrofoam mountain. Vancouver, Canada, and Mount Steinbok, found 125 miles east of
Vancouver, stood in for Seattle, Washington and Moose's Tooth, Alaska, which are featured
in the film's opening scenes. Filming at three different locations provided the K2
footage: Mount Waddington, 200 miles north of Vancouver; Skardu, Pakistan; and Blackcomb
Mountain, a ski resort 75 miles north of Vancouver. July
