  • Danish Expedition: Thrane & Thrane

The satellite communication company, Thrane & Thrane, is sponsoring the first all Danish Mount Everest Expedition. The expedition named ‘BigE – Thrane & Thrane Danish Everest Expedition 2000’ -  All eight members of the BigE-expedition are among the most experienced Danish climbers with significant mountaineering experience. Leader of the expedition and team doctor is Henrik Jessen Hansen. Henrik Jessen Hansen has been on five earlier expeditions to the Himalayas, including one to Mount Everest in 1996. This year was a disastrous year at Mount Everest with numerous casualties. As a result, Henrik Jessen Hansen had to give up his personal attempt to reach the summit. Instead Henrik Jessen Hansen established the world highest located emergency hospital, where he performed important and needed rescue help.

Thrane & Thrane has previously sponsored other mountaineering expeditions, including expeditions to Mt. Everest in 1996 and Gasherbrum I in Pakistan in 1998. However, the sponsorship of the BigE-expedition is by far the company’s biggest sponsorship investment. The main objective of the BigE-sponsorship is to present Thrane & Thrane as a leading-edge satellite communications company.

On the BigE-expedition Thrane & Thrane is represented by director Lars Thrane and electronic engineer, Jan Mathorne. Their participation in the expedition gives Thrane & Thrane a first-hand experience of the Capsat Messenger’s quality and reliability. In addition, it demonstrates Thrane & Thrane’s unique company spirit. Thrane & Thrane attracts some of the best electronic engineers and creative minds in the business and the people who work at Thrane & Thrane strive to push back the limits and reach new heights.

Update: "We are now in Nepal on our way to Base camp. We are at Lobuje, 4900 meter, and plan to climb Lobuje Peak the day after tomorrow as an acclimatization climb. Then we will be faster to climb the Everest icefall and thereby avoid being to long in the most dangerous part of Everest.

We plan to arrive at Base camp April the 10. but our Base camp is already established and our Sherpa team is responsible for the icefall route this year.

I'll send more news when we arrive at Base camp, but our dairy is updated daily on www.tt.dk "

Best wishes from

Bo Belvedere Christensen

This will be one of two expedition attempting the South Pillar route. The other is a Spanish expedition (TARRAGONA AL EVEREST) members Joanto Bellν, Josep Marνa Maixι, Jaume Garroxet, Xavi Lσpez, Xavi Aymar, Jacob Salvadσ, Joan Borreguero.

  • Everest Spring 2000: Byron Smith at C1 !

Current Status: Byron and the team are at Camp 1, after passing through the beautiful Khumbu Icefall. They'll stay here two nights, returning to Basecamp April 8.

For video updates (which are very good), and daily dispatches check Byron's Expedition out today: http://cbc.ca/everest2000/

  • Canadian Everest Expedition 2000:

Current Status: Ben Webster having a hard time, " I must apologize for being remiss in my entries over the last few days. Unfortunately, I was unable to dodge the bacterial infection that had laid low so many of the team."

You can get full details on the Canadians at the Canadian Everest Expedition 2000's official website -- http://www.canoe.ca/Everest/home.html

  • Dutch

Three Dutch Climbers Frits Vrijlandt, Steven Le Poole, and Joke Groenendaal: Frits and Steven, will attempt to climb Everest via the North ridge. When they succeed, they will be the first Dutchmen to do so. Joke will keep you updated.

Current Status: Headed North ! Everyone and everything across the border safely ZANGMU - After a long ride over bumpy and sometimes non-existent roads, the expedition has reached China safely today. Crossing the border is an exciting process because one never is sure that all luggage that is carried up by porters, actually reaches the other side of the border.

"This morning we got up at five to finally make our move to the mountain. The plan was to sleep in Nyalam at 3600 meters but now we are in a hotel in Zangmu (2300 meters)."

Check them out: http://www.everest.home.nl/ for the full details.

  • The Germans and the Austrians: Chomolungma by fair means without oxygen.

In the German/Austrian tradition these climbers will attempt Everest from the North without oxygen and by fair means. The climbers are Bastel Haller, Gustav Weinberger, Dr, Jurgen Zapf, Barbara Hirschbichler, Rudi Roozen, Georg Simair, and Mag. Thomas Lammie. Bastel has arranged communications to send some limited reports from Everest to EverestNews.com.

More Information: The expedition group is trying to climb Everest from the north by fair means. It is a scientific expedition which means Mag. Thomas Laemmle and Dr. Juergen Zapf are investigating on food and its effect on the ability to work and act in extreme altitude. Measurements that might not have never been made before...
